Stephanie Jonsson
Artist in Residence 2007/08

Stephanie Jonsson graduated from the University of Alberta in 2005 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a major in sculpture. Her practice has grown to include glazes and fabrics, both mediums that she was not formally trained in. After being employed with Plainsman Pottery Supply, she has expanded on her technical knowledge in ceramics.

Inspired by the exquisite random patterns left by the flow of nature, Stephanie’s sculptures burst with references to growth and cyclical repetition. She is intrigued by small nuances of colour, the curve of an opening petal, the crack in a frozen pool of ice. Utilizing traditional pottery techniques, such as throwing on the potter’s wheel or using extruded elements, she creates sculpture that invites allusions to plant life, underwater sea creatures, or sexual anatomy.

“I am interested in ideas surrounding “craft” and the notion of exploring functional glazes for non-functional purposes, as well as incorporating textiles in a non-traditional way. I aspire to conjure vague familiarity and memory that invites different associations and responses”.

During her residency, Stephanie plans to increase the scale of her work so that it is more installation based. Learn more about the artist and see her work online at www.stephaniejonsson.com.
