Game Plan
Kim Sala

Game Plan is an on going body of work, culminating from an investigation into contemporary life and culture which is inscribed and circumscribed by rule regulated spaces and networks. The basis for this group of work grew from drawings of game plans that a coach would use to direct the team in completing different offensive and defensive positions of play. The appearance of the paintings are inspired by the diagrams of play and the language of formalism is manipulated as a means to explore the conceptual notions about the governed laws and unwritten codes of society, the social field in which these codes exist are the focus. These paintings are generated from guidelines for human traffic whether it is a defensive soccer diagram or an ergonomic spatial plan for an institution. Most importantly my colour choices stem from a multiplicity of environments in which I feel the individual is under the scrutiny of an entity outside of themselves. Color choices are drawn from seemingly disparate sources such as the color theory of artists like Joseph Albers, the Revlon lipstick line for spring 2004 and flags of three warring nations. This is done in an attempt to draw attention to issues surrounding social arenas, conspicuous laws of behavior and inconspicuous manipulations of the social landscape. This body of work places an emphases on the confined rule regulated environments in which society functions.
