Betty Gibbs
December 30, 1946 – May 9, 2004

Life is finite and a terminal illness affirms that reality with glaring certitude.

In the face of such an illness, Betty Gibbs chose to spend the last days of her life pursuing creative endeavors in the form of visual art. Her love of the arts and her courageous determination in the practice of sculpture, painting and drawing, despite many obstacles, was an inspiration to everyone who knew her.

During my conversations with Betty about her upcoming exhibit at Harcourt House Gallery, she often spoke of light and dark and of light in the presence of darkness. She spoke of love in all its forms, but particularly of her love of people and community. It was her intention to explore these and other concepts in an exhibit to be mounted in February 2005, but her sudden death on May 9, 2004 changed those plans. Instead, a retrospective of Betty’s work will be presented from November 2004 in the Front Room of Harcourt House Gallery. Her courage, talent, integrity and undying passion shine brightly in the legacy of work she left behind. I invite everyone to celebrate the art and life of this remarkable woman and to celebrate the power of the creative spirit innate in all of us.
