in one's own time
Lee Anne Pellerin

One of the age-old ways of communication is through the poster. But what happens to these papers after they have served their original purpose?

In Edmonton there are numerous locations set aside for the display of posters and public notices. These sites offer a free-for all for the advertiser, with posters stapled taped or glued to their boards in the bid to grab the most advantageous spot for the promoter. The challenge for the user is the lack of control that this public space allows. Conversely, it is this very lack of control that offers a delightful benefit to the passerby. These spaces offer an oasis, morphing into tiny art galleries and museums.

What I have tried to do with this work is to capture and record the beauty of the poster. The juxtaposition of two or more seemingly unrelated posters creates a delightful melange of images which, if read as a whole, offer a wealth of visual treats. By focusing my camera on the minutia of the poster and noting the passage of time, I have tried to indicate how they can be read as indicators of our social stratum.
