The Offering
Adrian Cooke

Within given settings, natural/man-made forms evoke a range of emotions – solitude, longing, domination, perseverance, euphoria – which become source material. My work draws its inspiration from considerations of how ingrained patterns of human activity impose and intrude upon our sense of place and alter our relationship with it.

“In his book Shadows in the Sun: Essays on the Spirit of Place, Wade Davis addresses the notion that landscape holds the key to character and that the characteristic of the land, the whispered messages of the land, shape the values and characteristics of the people who make their home within it. I think of that as I experience the work of Adrian Cooke.”

   – Katherine Lipsett, Curator of Art at the Whyte Museum, Banff wrote the preceding in reference to my solo exhibition Ingrained.
