Between the Lines: Digitized Dialects and Encoded Traditions This exhibition brings together work from Jude Norris’s antler, nest, braided and Between the Lines series. All of the works in the show incorporate some common themes, devices, and approaches reflective of her experience as a multi-media indigenous artist. At times Norris isolates and repositions naturally growing and/or culturally common objects as a means of emphasizing both their formal and metaphorical qualities. Using diverse media such as beadwork, wool, antler, binary code and video projection, she also ‘translates’ Cree dialect and concept, both literally and symbolically, into digital and western art media and language, while maintaining fundamental indigenous position and perspective. These visually potent, idiosyncratic and often wry combinations contain pluralistic expression; simultaneously or in turn mirroring, critiquing, subverting, and celebrating various aspects contemporary colonial reality and multi-cultural interaction. |
Exhibition date: January 10 to February 16, 2008 |
