Cataclysmic Rescue Mission Obtaining her undergrad in painting at the Rhode Island School of Design, Liz Miller subsequently received her MFA from the University of Minnesota. She currently resides in Minnesota working as an assistant professor in drawing and foundations, at Minnesota State University. Having a solid base of solo and group exhibitions across the United States, Liz Miller ventures north of the border to Edmonton’s Artist Run Harcourt House Arts Centre to exhibit her site-specific installation Cataclysmic Rescue Mission. Receiving her MFA in drawing and painting, Liz Miller’s work transcends the two-dimensional surfaces, most typically associated with this background. Inspired by systems of simultaneous order and chaos, Miller uses a variety of non-traditional drawing materials such as felt, foam and adhesive vinyl which she meticulously folds, bends and pins to the gallery’s surface to compose an elaborate pulsating installation. Saccharine colours and intense repetition seduce the viewer, subscribing to an underlying logic that allows playfulness to lead to sinister conclusions. She comments on both the inherent failures and possibilities that result as we struggle with a world that is increasingly complex and multi-layered. |
