heyseeds Vancouver based artist, Nhan Duc Nguyen, focuses on process-based, community-engaging projects. This two part exhibition will incorporate an installation in Harcourt House Arts Centre’s Front Room gallery, and a second installation located at local Vietnamese restaurant Phobulous located at 8701-109 St in Edmonton. Inspired by the many tales of Vietnamese-Canadians, Nguyen pursues the themes of community, national history and cultural identity. One such tale that informs this two part exhibition is that of Ba Ba Bua (The Widow Ba), who is now a patron saint to many restaurant workers in North America. These two installations will incorporate various media to record and recount the stories of Vietnamese-Canadians through audio recorded interviews, sculpture and video. Nhan Duc Nguyen would like to thank everyone involved with this project particularly the restaurant workers who contributed to the research and interviews, the restaurants who hosted the project since 2006, and especially Peter Chan and Phobulous in Edmonton, Terrena Boss of Harcourt House Art Centre, Robert Ballantyne and Pulp Press, Chris Watson of the Edmonton Downtown Business Association, Randall Eckert and James Matas, Randall Lee, Martin Brook, Larry Nguyen, Mathew Nickerson, Laurent Nguyen, Jamie Nguyen, Lang Thi Nguyen and John Chapman. |
