My painting practice has been concerned with the contemporary landscape. While living in New York City, I began working from sketches of the places I encountered in my immediate surroundings: parking lots, fences, billboards and other apparently banal subject matter. The paintings' expressionist palettes are often acidic and uncharacteristic of a natural space - these colours are founded in my memory of the original experience related to it. As the image moves into abstraction there is the potential for a loss of meaning, or new meaning to emerge and the tension between natural and synthetic.
